Although it’s far from western countries, Luxembourg 136.5kg as no.1 meat eating country, U.S.A 125.4 kg as no.2 per person per year, Japanese have food culture to eat meat.
Pork / 20.5kg per person per year
Pork is the most popular meat in Japan. The amount of consumption is 20.5 kg per person per year, as of 2019. Self-sufficiency ratio is around 50 %. Remaining half is imported from U.S.A, Canada, Denmark, Spain, etc.
There are many Japanese cuisine with pork. Here are the popular pork dishes in Japan :

Horse meat is with the 4th largest consumption in Japan. However, it’s not popular. Japanese eat only 0.1 kg per person per year, as of 2019. Self-sufficiency ratio is around 40 %. Remaining 60% is imported from Canada, Mexico, Argentina, etc.
Horse meat is eaten as local cuisine in some area in Japan. It’s mainly in Kumamoto, Nagano, Fukushima. Popular menu is ‘Basashi’ as raw horse meat (above photo) and ‘Sakura Nabe’ as horse meat hot pot.
